'Note. — These arms -were originally belonging to the family of D Oyris, of Gadnej% in Lincolnshire, whose daughter and heiress was married to Constable, and these arms were lirst assumed, in lieu of their paternal bearing, (which was or, a fesse compony, ar. and az. in chief a lion, passant, gu.) by Sir Simon Constable, grandson of the heiress of D'Oyris, about the year 1280. The Constables of Thornetoft, St. Sepulchre s, Kilnsey, Bentley, Essington, Kirby-Knoll, and Upsal, were all branched out from this house, and bore the same arms, with the proper distinctions.
